1. Mercher / Mercury

Caffi Kiki, Newmarket square, Y Pafiliwn, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd LL41 3UL

  • Planed agosaf i’r haul, gan wneud cylchdro llawn mewn dim ond 88 diwrnod
  • Gellir ei gweld â’r llygad noeth, er mai dyma’r blaned maint llawn leiaf
  • Prin yn troi ar ei hechel, mae wedi ‘cloi’n llanwol’ i’r Haul
  • Dim lleuadau – yn rhy agos at yr haul i gystadlu â’i ddisgyrchiant
  • Planed maint llawn leiaf
  • Daearegol anweithgar
  • Mae’r wyneb wedi ei geudyllu’n helaeth o effaith asteroidau
  • Yn cymryd 54 diwrnod daear i gwblhau un cylchdro, felly mae ei diwrnod bron cyn hired â’i blwyddyn!
  • Anaml y caiff ymweliadau gwyddonol – yn ymarferol yn anodd iawn oherwydd ei bod yn agos at yr haul
  • Atmosffer yn denau iawn – mae’n hawdd ei chwythu gan wyntoedd solar
  • Mae ganddi graidd metelau trwchus
  • Nodwyd yn gyntaf gan yr Asyriaid yn 1400 CC
  • Enwyd ar ôl y negesydd Duw Rhufeinig, Mercher, a oedd yn gyflym o droed.

Sut y cafodd ei gwneud:

Mae Mercher yn blaned greigiog gyda miloedd o dyllau, felly cafodd ei gwneud o sment, llechi a thopiau poteli ar gyfer y tyllau. Gwnaed Mercher gan blant Ysgol Maenofferen, Blaenau Ffestiniog gyda’r artist Rachel Rosen

Mercury

Location: Caffi Kiki, Newmarket square, Y Pafiliwn, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3UL

  • Closest planet to the sun, making a full orbit in just 88 days
  • Observable to the naked eye, although it is the smallest full size planet
  • Barely spins on its axis, it is ‘tidally locked’ to the Sun
  • No moons – too close to the sun to compete with its gravity
  • Smallest full size planet
  • Geologically inactive
  • Surface is heavily cratered from impact of asteroids
  • Takes 54 earth days to complete one rotation, so it’s day is almost as long as it’s year!
  • Not often visited by scientific missions – practicalities very difficult that close to the sun
  • Only a very thin atmosphere – is easily blown away by solar winds
  • Has a dense metallic core
  • First identified by the Assyrians in 1400 BC
  • Named for the Roman messenger god Mercury, who is fleet of foot.

How it was made:

Mercury is a rocky planet with thousands of craters, so it has been made out of cement, slate and bottle tops for the craters. Mercury has been made by children from Maenofferen School, Blaenau Ffestiniog with the artist Rachel Rosen.
