5. Iau / Jupiter

Iau

  • Y blaned fwyaf yng nghysawd yr haul a’r cyntaf o’r cewri nwy – gallai holl blanedau eraill cysawd yr haul ffitio y tu mewn i Iau.
  • Wedi ei gwneud yn bennaf o hydrogen a heliwm, a phetai wedi bod yn llawer mwy, byddai wedi dod yn seren.
  • Mae disgyrchiant yn llawer cryfach ar Iau – os ydych chi’n pwyso 50kg ar y ddaear, byddech chi’n pwyso 120kg ar Iau.
  • Mae ganddi atmosffer trwchus dwys wedi’i wneud o amonia, gyda storm barhaol o’r enw ‘man coch’.
  • Mae ganddi hyd at 79 lleuad (rhai wedi’u darganfod yn ddiweddar ac yn aros am ddosbarthiad)
  • Y blaned sy’n troi gyflymaf yng nghysawd yr haul – dim ond 10 awr o hyd yw diwrnod
  • Mae ganddi awrora, debyg i Oleuni’r Gogledd ar y ddaear
  • Arsylwyd arni gyntaf gan y Babiloniaid yn y seithfed neu’r wythfed ganrif CC
  • Mae ganddi system gylch wan, sy’n denau a llychlyd
  • Mae’n ‘gawr nwy’ anferth, 10 gwaith yn ehangach na’r ddaear
  • Mae storm barhaol arni o’r enw man coch Iau, sy’n fwy na thair gwaith maint y Ddaear
  • Mae’r lleuad mwyaf Ganymede yn fwy na’r blaned Mercher
  • Wedi ei gwneud o ddeunydd tebyg i sêr ond mae hi ychydig yn llai

Sut y cafodd ei gwneud:

Mae gan Iau atmosffer cymhleth, gan gynnwys y man coch enwog, felly mae’r patrymau a’r amrywiadau lliw wedi’u gwneud gyda rhaff forol a cherrig mân. Gwnaethpwyd Iau gan blant o Ysgol Cefn Coch, Penrhyndeudraeth gyda’r artist Rachel Rosen.

Jupiter

  • Largest planet in the solar system and the first of the gas giants – all of the other planets of the solar system could fit inside Jupiter.
  • It is mostly made of hydrogen and helium and if it had been much larger it would have become a star.
  • Gravity is much stronger on Jupiter – if you weigh 50 kg on earth you would weigh 120kg on Jupiter
  • Has a dense swirling atmosphere, made of ammonia, with a permanent storm known as the red spot.
  • It has up to 79 moons (some recently discovered and awaiting classification)
  • It is the fastest spinning planet in the solar system, a day is only 10 hours long
  • Has aurora like our Northern Lights
  • First observed by the Babylonians in the seventh or eighth century BC
  • Has a faint ring system, which are thin and dusty
  • Is an enormous ‘gas giant’ 10 x wider than earth
  • There is a permanent storm known as the red spot of Jupiter which is more than three times the size of Earth
  • The largest moon Ganymede is bigger than Mercury
  • It is made of similar material to stars but is just smaller

How it was made:

Jupiter has a complex swirling atmosphere including the famous red spot, so the patterns and colour variations have been made with marine rope and pebbles. Jupiter has been made by children from Cefn Coch School, Penrhyndeudraeth with the artist Rachel Rosen.
